mandala of compassion

The Buddhist monks of Ari Bhöd were once again invited to the Hammer Museum to create a sand mandala. Starting with a clean wooden board, the monks spent two weeks fulfilling the design of the “Mandala of Compassion.” The event concluded with the dispersion of the sand at the Pacific Ocean.

ari bhöd

We visited Ari Bhöd for a weekend of volunteer work, hang with friends and see Dr. Tsering, the revered Tibetan doctor from Nepal. We also enjoyed the abundance of lavender bloom and their company of bees.

tibetchapi

“Tibetchapi” is my nickname for Tibet and the city of Tehachapi in Kern County, California. Why, you may ask? Hidden in the folds of the Tehachapi Mountains lies the vast compound of Ari Bhöd, “The American Foundation for Tibetan Cultural Preservation.”

During our last visit, we were greeted by the neighboring goats and our favorite feline resident of Ari Bhöd, Elliot. He is the unofficial guardian of the grounds and our little red cabin. The monks will be returning this summer and we look forward to visiting with them again.
